Direct measurement of the interlayer coupling strength in a layered superconductor

We have imaged the magnetic fields at the edges of the conducting planes of a single crystal of the layered organic superconductor κ-(BEDTTTF)2Cu(NCS)2. The spatial dependence of these fields agrees well with a Josephson-coupled layer model with some inhomogeneity in the interlayer coupling, providing a direct measurement of the interlayer coupling strength. This coupling is sufficiently weak as to put constraints on the applicability of the interlayer tunneling model to superconductivity in this material.
